PR Anecdote: Minimalist Van Life with Randy A. Lewis

You can rest assured that this is not an ad but a summary of what I learned recently from releasing a video that is supposed to spark the beginning of a great new series but instead primarily resulted in this lesson.

First off, you won’t find the video here but you can search for it if you want.

My name is Joshua Autrey Serrano and to put things into context, a hobby of mine is publishing the photos and videos I take of local restaurants, hotels and attractions on my website about Southern California.

“Minimalist Van Life” is a documentary series for that website about a best friend of mine, Randy A. Lewis, who has expressed a desire to free himself financially through minimalism and a nomadic lifestyle.

So the lesson starts here: I took a risk and started production far too early. It has not created problems but the mark made is permanent. There is no way to remove the distributed releases from other people’s websites. There is no way to erase people’s first impressions. Fortunately, the first mistake I made has a silver lining.

In an attempt to invoke an emotional response, the message implied the series might be useful to people in certain financial circumstances. In retrospect, that was a mistake for two reasons. One, sponsors do not want the attention of irrelevant audiences and the content of that release implied a primarily low-income audience. Two, there is already an aspiring van life community that was not only not addressed but negatively associated with hardship.

Honestly, the first lesson is to stick to the truth. In reality, I admire people who live in vehicles for the reason that lifestyles like their’s have an adventurous tone with an entirely different set of risks than traditional home dwellers. I should have said that instead.

On top of that, the goal was to associate the series back to the host website because it all ties into the plan we have for marketing. What happened was that the plan somehow got ignored. What was supposed to set this series apart from other series is its involvement in local communities. Everything is still set up to execute as planned but the opportunity to tell people that in the release has sailed.

A secondary lesson is that the best marketing is accomplished by knowing the industry you intend to work with well enough. People hate marketers so take that into consideration.

The Problem with Most Financial Freedom Content

I used to see them once in a while, usually as a banner or sidebar ad on a blog or website. Now they seem inevitable wherever I am. The financial “freedom” trend is becoming the opposite of what it should be.

It should be the solution to a problem and not a problem itself. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be your own boss but proof-of-concept exists for a reason.

Having a developed skill means you should be able to use your time as leverage to profit. Having business-related skills means you should be able to succeed in a business setting. Having both means you have the potential to be self-employed. Having both plus the ability to market yourself effectively puts you in a position to attract investment for a business but that doesn’t mean you should start a business.

Having all of those things, plus a savings or source of sustainable income still does not mean you will succeed but it does mean you’re in a position to start a small business.

Having succeeded in running a small business does not always translate easily into scaling. Expanding is best done with one or more partners who have proven their trust and experience.

Many social media accounts and bloggers have been taking advantage of trends that lure greedy, impatient or desperate victims to conclusions that making money is very easy and can be done for little to no investment. The problem here is that people are falling for it and they inevitably fail but not before losing money, time and morale.

It is okay to fail. Most of us are not masters or experts. Business might not be the best place for you. It can be soul-sucking. If You are meant for business, you will learn very quickly that rejection is not failure.

So in summary, you should not rush to take a loan out or max out your credit cards.

Roads to Financial Freedom: Bitcoin Trading

My personal favorite quality in a job is freedom. Investing is, by far, the most challenging thing I’ve tried to do because I’m not great at taking my own advice. If you can motivate yourself without immediate results, and you love working with numbers, try this:

Go make a bitcoin wallet ( I suggest Coinbase.com because I’m not a fan of Xapo or many other wallets). This prepares you for your next step. You are opening an account to hold the bitcoin you will be making.

While there are many ways to obtain Bitcoin, such as purchasing it, the easiest way for someone with only internet and time to spare to earn a few dollars per day to invest is to take surveys. (I have only ever used Bitcoinget.com)

Now, you can make a few dollars in a day taking surveys, but that’s about it. That’s not the end of this get-rich-the-hard-way plan though. Once you have at least a pizza worth of bitcoin, take your beginner self to an exchange (like YoBit.net).

You’ll find graphs, prices, cryptocurrencies, regular currencies and a lot of people in the chat room who are trying to sell you on their favorite altcoins (the bitcoin equivalent of a stock). Do not take the advice of people trying to sell you something. Those people are profiting off of you when you buy the coins they suggest.

The hidden benefit is that you gain valuable trading experience that can translate well into day trading on the stock market or FOREX. There are other exchanges aside from the mentioned above ones, some better than others.

Things to keep an eye out for when starting to trade are trading fees, minimums, locations, security, reviews and investments available. Many exchanges advertise new initial coin offerings which are similar to IPOs and those are generally something to stay away from unless you do a lot of prior research.

It is not a get-rich-quick strategy but it does provide financial freedom in the sense that you can work from anywhere, anytime and the potential is up to you.

How To Profit From Your Services & Products

I could turn this into an ad for my marketing services ( animationandwhatnot.com ) but I can’t imagine who would read that. So instead, here’s some actual advice.

A majority of products and services are going to take capital, strategy and effort to get off the ground. Nowadays, everyone wants to be self-sufficient and that creates competition.

My first suggestion for those who already know what they’re selling is to study your competition. Study the successful ones to see what they do right. Study the unsuccessful ones to see what they do wrong. Study yourself to see where you are and where you could be.

How does that make you money? It prepares you to remove the barriers that keep you from success.

Equally important is maintaining a healthy and professional reflection of your work. You wouldn’t put your credit card into a sketchy looking machine, so then why would you expect someone else to put their money into a sketchy looking business?

Look at least as good as the work you provide, if not better. Unfortunately, people do judge books by their cover and it’s your right to take advantage of that.

You should begin to see the image being uncovered. Once you’ve become aware of your barriers, you can gradually eliminate them and then focus on your work and how other people see you. If people see you as a potential value they could be missing out on, they might just decide to take a chance they won’t regret.

My primary focus, though no more or less vital to the outcome, are actions. Our own actions and the calls-to-action placed in front of people are what bring phone calls, emails and sales. While there are other parts to a good sales funnel, no good system is without direct and indirect actions.

To put the puzzle together plainly, profit comes from providing time, services or products, but product development is only a small piece. The rest comes from realizing the road ahead by envisioning potential problems in order to find solutions before you arrive. Making decisions and asking others for support will slowly bring you the right way.

Do not forget to keep your senses alert along the journey. Your process is worth even more than the results.

What has helped you become self-sufficient in the ever-changing financial world?

How to Make More Money

What do you do for a living? What are you good at? The answer to either of these questions could be the answer to what could you be doing in addition to what you do already to generate more income.

Never assume starting your own business is going to be easy. It’s not easier than selling your time. It’s not going to save you time. It’s not going to happen very quickly, but it will be satisfying to get the ball rolling.

It takes years to maintain and grow a successful business. How do you make more money now then?

Take the business out of business but leave the traits of financial success and what do you have?

You, what you do and great marketing.

So if your only talent is helping people with their groceries, find ways to let the world know that you are the world’s most passionate grocery carrier. That way, if anyone finds themselves in a position where they need some help, and they can somehow get in contact, your name will be known and your service will be a godsend to whoever calls.

Some people call this freelancing. I call it self-employment.

That was just an example. Replace helping people with their groceries with whatever it is you can do, unless you like competition.

Have an idea? Leave a comment and I’ll be sure to get back to you as soon as I can.

Why No One Wants What You’re Selling… Yet

Have you bought anything new recently that wasn’t extremely convenient to buy, suggested by a friend or hyped up by an advertisement?

Sometimes, the product is not developed enough and even the best advertising campaign can’t save you from that.

Whether your product is a part of you or you are your product, you have to continue learning about the people you want to sell to and forget about your own preferences for a minute.

Once you’ve entered the marketplace, your opinion does not matter unless you’re selling it.

Your product is not convenient enough, popular enough or advertised well enough yet. That’s okay. It happens to everyone. No one is spared from failure.

Handling the marketing and advertising yourself seems like a great way to save money, but it is three full-time jobs. Finding the best way to market yourself, positioning yourself and executing a plan with room for flexibility are not easy tasks.

For example, through Elevator Pitch Animation, I am provided with:

Why do I bother with a bunch of seemingly random, tedious practices? Why would anyone hire a company to carry their marketing responsibilities?

Because for every dollar spent, I make back two or more and because a marketing company depends on your growth for its own survival.

Road to Financial Freedom #1: Bitcoin Trading

Your income by the next year is likely to be $300+ per day if you’re better than the average joe by then.

Financial Healing

All good things start from within. Therefore, all healing starts within.

If someone else pays off your debts, you will not heal. Unless you accept all responsibility for all circumstances in your life, you will continue to deal with the same problems.

Consider yourself fortunate if your only problems are financial.

Learn how to solve your own problems step by step and with certainty that you can succeed.

If you find yourself here, you have already expressed a desire to begin your journey to financial freedom. You have already started, but one of the most difficult parts is seeing it through.

Your journey is a road to self-control. Some days, the path will be clear and beautiful. Other days, the path will be hard to see and brutal, but the path will clear again.

When you find yourself at the end of the path, you may begin building a new road for yourself. Life without the chains of debt will be surprisingly different than one may expect.

The second step is to recognize money as an externalized energy and nothing more. Instead of focusing on where to trade your time for money, try focusing on how to bring your value from within you to without you.

You’ve already completed the first step.

Cryptocurrency Trading

Though classified as a “video game”, trading virtual currencies teaches a person everything he/she might need to know to start trading FOREX.

While the rules and laws are entirely different, buy and sell orders are the same. Charts are the same. Numbers still have decimals. Instead of pips, they call them Satoshis.

Currently, I’m using Bitcoin to trade on Yobit. If you find yourself interested, I’d be happy to post more about which coins I’ll be buying and selling.

Even though virtual currency isn’t “real”, you can buy things, like how an arcade has prizes you can select, but these arcade tickets can get you anywhere from an Amazon gift card to luxury real estate in California.

There are other exchanges you can trade with, but I personally favor Yobit for its simplicity and community.

Do not risk any money you are not willing to lose. You wouldn’t go all in if you were a good FOREX trader, so don’t go all in on anything you are not 100% confident about.

This is not a way to get rich quick, but it is extremely educational. It is possible to make a few shekels if you know what you’re doing.

You can begin with as little as 0.0001BTC (about $0.10 USD)!

*Beware of your country’s laws regarding the use of cryptocurrency websites and virtual currencies*

The Only Way to Success is through Other People

Successful entrepreneurs often are the most efficient at asking people how they can help them today and then bringing that assistance on a gradually increasing scale.

Whether it’s financial success, mental success or some other third thing, it will eventually become apparent that you can do nothing by yourself. If you have all the money in the world, you have nothing to experience without people to fulfill the voids of life.

I’m choosing to invest in people in the present. Wherever success takes me, I will be happy to be. The do-it-yourself trend is a great example of how people help each other to help themselves. It is very powerful today, and it serves a tremendous purpose; the self-improvement of confidence and willpower. That being said, there are still many things you’ll never fully be able to do by yourself.

Throughout my investments and losses, I’ve learned that nothing is a better investment than companionship. Trust, dependability, honesty and time are things money cannot buy with money.

Your energy is all you really have in this life. If you use it all selfishly, you might have a nice house to retire in, but it will grow tiresome without the right people. When you efficiently use your energy for the good and betterment of all others, it won’t matter how bad your situations become because you will have an army of support.

If you want everyone else to invest in you, why would you hesitate to invest in everyone else?

I will be sharing my investment’s information shortly at ElevatorPitchAnimation for anyone curious about what I’ll be spending my time working on. You’re welcome to donate at my non-financial blog TakeThatStupidPeople.com
